Plans for a new riverside pub in Workington have been given the go-ahead.

Marston’s wants to build a family pub with a 150-seat restaurant beside the River Derwent, next to Tesco.

Allerdale council's development panel voted unanimously in favour of planners' recommendation to approve the scheme.

Scott Mackay, of Mackay Planning, who worked as a planning consultant on the project, told the panel the development would lean more towards food than drink.

He said: "70 per cent of the turnover will be food, 30 per cent drink."

The 568sq m building would be built on almost an acre of greenfield land.

The company said the development, off New Bridge Road, was expected to create 40 to 45 jobs, equivalent to 25 full-time roles.

Manager's accommodation is included in the plan.

There is also proposed outdoor seating for up to 50 people, 53 parking spaces and a cycle rack.

The site would be accessed via New Bridge Road, where a new junction would be created.

Planning consultants for the firm had been actively seeking a site in Workington for some time.

The existing Cumbrian Coastal Path route, which follows the perimeter of the site, would be retained.

The vacant land was previously owned by Allerdale council and has been transferred to the Allerdale Investment Partnership, a joint venture between Allerdale council and Lucent Allerdale Partnership SARL.

Marston’s submitted a planning application for the project in May.
