Drivers and walkers are warned that they may be flooding around one of Cumbria's most popular lakes today.

Heavy rainfall in the River Derwent area overnight means that the lake level at Derwentwater, Keswick, has been rising.

The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert - the lowest level of warning to say flooding is possible - for the Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwentwater.

It states that water levels suggest that there will be flooding to low lying land and roads close to the lake throughout the day.

The alert reads: "We expect the river and lake to remain high throughout today though no flooding to properties is forecast and at this stage we do not expect to issue warnings.

"There is very little rain forecast for the rest of today, and the lake level is forecast to peak at around midday."

Officers have been monitoring levels across the county in anticipation of issues arising from the arrival of Storm Brian.

Parts of west Cumbria also experienced power cuts, which have been restored by engineers from Electricity North West.

Some parts of Britain have experienced gusts of almost 80mph as Brian batters the country.

While Cumbria appears to have escaped much of the weather, there has been flooding in parts of neighbouring Lancashire.
