Four people were taken to hospital following a multi-vehicle crash in Workington.

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision and are this morning appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 6.45pm.

The collision happened near McColls, at the junction of Harrington Road and John Street, in Workington.

The vehicles involved were a red Seat Leon and a black Fiat Punto.

An eye witness reporting that firefighters are working to free someone from the black car.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "The driver and passenger in the Punto and the driver and passenger in the Leon were all taken to Cumberland Infirmary.

However, none of those involved are believed to have suffered any life-threatening or altering injuries."

Officers are appealing for witnesses who saw the crash or either of the vehicles in the moments leading up to it.

They are particularly keen to hear from the driver of a white van parked nearby.

Harrington Road was blocked as a result of the crash, causing some delays.
