Free self defence classes are being offered across Cumbria in the wake of the horrifying London terror attacks.

Techniques used by the Israeli army to disarm knife-wielding attackers will be taught to those taking part by former soldier Shaun Weir.

Mr Weir, who runs self defence classes at various locations across the county, wants to help boost people's skills and confidence.

It comes after eight people were killed and 48 more injured when three attackers drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge before stabbing people in the area around Borough Market.

Mr Weir, who lives in Whitehaven, said: "Because of the recent terrorist attacks around the country there are a lot of people living in fear of the 'what if it happened to me.'

"There is a major problem this day and age with knives and edged weapons on the streets – the number is on a drastic rise.

"Every day in the newspapers somebody has been injured or killed in a knife attack.

"The recent attack in London caused a lot of concern to a lot of people so I want to offer this service that could help a lot of people."

The first of three sessions took place yesterday (MON) in Egremont Market Hall at 6pm; the second is at St Gregory and St Patrick's school in Whitehaven on Thursday at 6.30pm and the final class takes place in the Denton Holme community centre in Carlisle from 6.30pm on Friday.

Each session lasts around 90 minutes and are available to anyone over the age of 16.

So far about 20 people have contacted him regarding places and there is plenty of space available.

Shaun specialises in teaching Krav Maga, a military self-defence system developed for the Israeli army.
