A school near Cockermouth will have a memorial stone remembering former pupils who died in World War One - thanks to a grant of £1,500 from Cumbria Community Foundation.

Broughton Primary School appealed to the community to help it raise money a few months ago.

The school wanted to unveil the memorial, which is expected to cost about £1,500, on Sunday, November 11, 100 years after the signing of the armistice.

A school spokesman said: "We are absolutely delighted that Cumbria Community Foundation through the United Utilities Legacy Fund have approved our application.

"The project to mount a memorial was initiated some five months ago and it was then we started to apply to associations for grants.

"You are always slightly apprehensive about raising the finance needed, so we were thrilled to hear our CCF application had been successful."

The school also received donations from residents and the village's British Legion and Parish Council.

"We will shortly be inviting all households in the village to the unveiling commemoration service on November 11," said the spokesman.

"It is important that we remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice. The memorial will honour our former pupils in perpetuity.”

Annalee Holliday, of CCF, said: “This grant follows on from the schools’ First World War centenary project. It's important children understand the sacrifices local people made during that time."
