A HIGH-STREET baker's has landed itself in hot water after a controversial advert for its limited-edition advent calendar depicted the nativity with a sausage roll, instead of baby Jesus.

Greggs, which has a number of outlets across Cumbria, used an image of the traditional nativity scene, but decided to place a sausage roll in the manger, surrounded by the three wise men.

The move sparked outrage among many Christians who believe the ad campaign was blasphemous and derogatory.

A spokesman for the chain which has two branches in Dalton Road, said: “We're really sorry to have caused any offence, this was never our intention."

The company is one of many offering novelty advent calendars this year with makeup, gin and cheese all proving tempting to consumers.

Instead of a small chocolate each day, Greggs lovers will receive a token behind each door which can be redeemed inside any of the 1,700 stores across the UK.

There are only 500 limited-edition calendars on sale and the store claims they are actually worth between £35- £65 have only been available from 17 stores.

Other publicity photos included a Santa with pasty flakes on his beard, a Greggs shop in a snow globe and a steak bake on a festive table.
