Hundreds of rock fans turned out to the first-ever Haven and Hell festival at Whitehaven's Recreation Ground.

The all-day event on Saturday saw major names perform such as Diamond Head and Girlschool joined by Oliver/Dawson Saxon, Massive Wagons, the John Verity Band, Motorhead tribute Stone Deaf Forever, Hammerhead, Syteria, Sex P****d Dolls and Rigid Digits.

There are hopes that the event, which attracted around 450 West Cumbrians, is the first of many.

Amanda Hewer, general manager at Whitehaven Rugby League Club, said: "It was really good. People got into the spirit of it."

"This is the first one we've had. We just want grow year to year.

"We would like to do it as more of a weekend event."

Amanda said the event was "chilled out" as rock fans enjoyed the music and beer!

Thanks goes to Whitehaven Town Council and promoters Andrew Sloan and Steve Harper for sponsoring the event, she added.

Amanda said it would not have been possible for the event to go ahead without the financial support of the town council.

Money raised from the event will be split between Whitehaven Rugby League, to give the club a boost, and the promoters.

Music fans from across West Cumbria enjoyed the show.

Among those performing was Syteria, who feature Girschool's Jackie Chambers on guitar and vocals, and Blackpool punk five-piece Sex P****d Dolls.

And Rigid Digits paid tribute to Northern Irish punk icons Stiff Little Fingers.

Long-running five-piece Diamond Head, who were one of the leading lights in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement entertained the crowds as well as Girlschool.

Music fans were also treated to the sounds of Oliver/Dawson Saxon as well as Lancashire's Massive Wagons and blues rock veteran John Verity with his band.

Motörhead tribute, Stone Deaf Forever, also played the greatest hits by Lemmy and co. While West Cumbria's own heavy metal veterans, Hammerhead, also took to the stage.
