Labour's candidate for the Copeland by-election is making a second bid to be the constituency's MP.

Gillian Troughton has been selected as the party's contender for next month's General Election.

Her candidacy was announced on social media along with a raft of other candidates across the country.

They included confirmation that Ruth Alcroft will fight in Carlisle.

Currently a city councillor, she will challenge sitting Conservative MP John Stevenson. Fiona Mills has declared that she'll fight the seat for Ukip.

In Copeland, Mrs Troughton, a county councillor, will attempt to oust Conservative MP Trudy Harrison, who made history just two months ago by becoming the first Tory in 80 years to represent the seat following the resignation of Labour MP Jamie Reed.

Mrs Harrison took Copeland with a 2,147 majority over Labour.

Mr Stevenson is defending a majority of 2,774 from 2015.
