Thirty would-be stars turned out at the Carnegie Theatre in Workington for a chance to appear in ITV’s The Voice as auditions took place on Tuesday.

For Claire Rothery, 38, of High Harrington, it was a second chance to audition for a TV talent show.

She said: “I got an audition for the X-Factor but I couldn’t afford to go because it was in Manchester.

“It’s really good that they come up to little towns. We’ve got some pretty good voices up here.”

Claire, who is mother to Lucy, 19, and twins Jack and Lewis, 14, sang No Good by Amy Winehouse.

Her brother Andrew Caine and friend Chris Wilson were there to support her.

She said: “I’m not expecting to go through. I’ve done it more for the experience because I’ve never auditioned before. If I did go through it would be great but it’s more about having fun.”

Candidates will find out next week if they were successful in gaining a further chance to audition.

John Hastings, 44, of Workington, auditioned with Volare by Dean Martin.

John is not new to auditioning for TV talent shows. He auditioned for The Voice in Carlisle last year and attempted three times to be selected for the X-Factor between 2009 and 2015.

He came third in the contest Cumbria’s Got Talent.

John said: “I thought I might as well take the chance because they’re here in Workington. It was nice of them to come up.

“I’ve never been nervous when I’ve gone on stage. I just felt confident going up.

“One of my ambitions is to record songs for charity.

“It would mean a lot if I went through but at the end of the day I’m coming here to do my best and everything else is a bonus.”

Auditions also took place at Rowrah’s the Brewery Tap on Monday, where people auditioning included Jo Goddard, of Cockermouth, and Gary Jackson of Stainburn, Workington.
