Nearly £9 million could be spent on some of Allerdale's worst roads.

More than 50 roads need potholes filled in, resurfaced or rebuilt.

Planned works include £346,000 on resurfacing at Lillyhall, a £311,000 scheme at Sundawn, off the A595 in Cockermouth, and £282,000 on roads between Lillyhall and Dean.

A £288,000 resurfacing scheme between Seaton and the crossroads at Little Broughton has also been identified as well as £282,000 for work from Maryport to Broughton Moor.

Cumbria County Council's highways team has picked out the roads which need work over the next five years.

Keith Little, cabinet member for highways, said the highways' officers, who have "an understanding of the state of the roads", come up with a rolling programme of work.

"We're always hugely playing catch up due to a lack of funding coming through the system. The damage continues to increase across the network due to winter weather and other aspects.

"The edge of the Lake District has suffered pretty badly due to winter weather. Some of these roads have been in the scheme for two or three years and worked there way up to the top."

Over £1 million has been outlined for eight schemes in 2018/19. This includes a £300,000 scheme at The Headlands, Keswick, phase one of resurfacing work totalling £250,000 between Aspatria and Mealsgate and £163,000 on Fangs Brow, Loweswater.

More proposals which could go ahead over the next year include £127,000 of resurfacing work at Hayton Village, a £115,000 scheme between Eaglesfield and Greysouthern and £85,000 of work at High Rigg, Brigham.

There is also a £80,000 proposal at Station Terrace, Embleton, and a £75,000 proposal from Waverbridge to Dundraw.

Phase two of the Aspatria to Mealsgate scheme would cost £150,000 and has been earmarked for 2019/20.

A report by highways' officers said: "The proposed programme for 2018/19 will ensure that we are working towards improving the greatest amount of failing network as well as protecting the remainder of the council's highway assets through significant investment in preventative maintenance."

The council's local committee for Allerdale will discuss the plans at its meeting on Monday, February 5.

A final decision on the proposed roadworks will be made when the council confirms its budget later this month.
