Cockermouth has a new mayor.

Councillor Alan Tyson was sworn in at the town council’s annual meeting.

Coun David Malloy was elected as deputy mayor.

This is Coun Tyson’s second time as mayor. He has been deputy mayor for the past year.

The retired scientific civil servant has been a councillor for a total of six years. His current term as a councillor began with election in 2015.

His daughter Gillian Jackson, the practice manager at Millcroft Vets, will be his consort.

Coun Tyson, 74, of Newlands Road, thanked councillors for their support.

He said: “I’m looking forward to the next year.”

Throughout his time in office he will support Hospice at Home West Cumbria. He has still to decide on a second charity.

Coun Malloy, 54, is an engineer with United Utilities.

This is his third year on the town council.

Coun Malloy, of Slatefell Drive, said: “I was born and bred in Cockermouth and am honoured to be chosen.”

Outgoing mayor Coun Sam Standage said: “My fourth term as mayor has been a real pleasure.”
