The best Christmas songs always seems to find the perfect balance between timelessness and nostalgia and can get even the biggest Scrooge in the Christmas spirit.

1. Fairytale of New York
One of the most beloved Christmas songs of recent years is thanks to the musical stylings of the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl.

 

2. Santa Claus is Coming to Town
First written in 1934, it's been performed by artists from Bruce Springsteen to Michael Jackson and has featured in countless Christmas films.

 

3. All I want for Christmas is You
Performed by Mariah Carey in 1994, it's sold more than 14 million copies and remains one of the most popular festive love songs.

 

 

4. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas 
Judy Garland's recognisable tine was written for the musical 1944 'Meet me in St.Louis', but it was Frank Sinatra's 1957 version which brought the song to greater prominence.

 

5. Do They Know It's Christmas?
It was written in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure and recorded in one day by Band Aid - a supergroup they put together of the biggest acts of the time. It was in reaction to television reports of the 1983–85 famine in Ethiopia and sold one million copies in the first week.

 

6. Last Christmas
Performed by Wham! in 1984, it became the biggest selling single in the UK never to reach the top of the charts. All of the song's royalties were donated to the Ethiopian Famine appeal.

 

7. Rockin' around the Christmas Tree
This was recorded by Brenda Lee in 1958 when she was only 13, but did not become famous until 1960 when she was better known.

 

8. Merry Xmas Everybody
This 1973 Slade classic took the coveted Christmas number one slot that year - beating another Christmas-themed song.

 

9. I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday
And it was the Wizzard festive marvel which was beaten to the festive top spot in 1973. Despite its popularity more than 40 years later, it only managed the number four spot in the charts that Christmas.

 

10. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
The song first made an appearance in 1939, but it wasn't until 1949 that the well-known song was recorded by Gene Autry. It sold 25 million copies and remained the second best-selling record of all time until the 1980s.
