Plans for five new homes on the edge of Cockermouth have been thrown out by Allerdale council.

It was decided that the five bungalows on land south-east of Towers Lane would have an "adverse impact upon settlement form and character".

Town councillors had recommended that D Addis be refused planning permission, saying the town has more than enough new houses.

They said the development would result in an over supply of housing and would not fit in with the pattern of development in the area.

Councillor Alan Smith said: "We have said all along this is planning creep. If you get these five, you will get another five and so on.

"If we had a neighbourhood plan it would prevent this."

Seven letters of objection were received to the proposed home.

Brian Coley, of Towers Lane, said: "Cockermouth already has more than enough properties approved to satisfy the Allerdale Local Plan until 2029."

Neighbour David Horton said: "There has already been a huge increase in new build in Cockermouth, with no corresponding increase in amenities, particularly health. The last thing we need is yet more of the same."

Fellow Towers Lane resident Valerie Ayre pointed out there were no affordable homes in the plan.

She added: "There has already been a huge increase in new build developments in Cockermouth particularly at this end of the town, with no corresponding increase in amenities, particularly health and schools, plus no consideration for the impact of yet further vehicles on the already stretched local infrastructure.

"The last thing we need in this area is yet more unwanted developments."
