Plans have been revealed to cut speed limits around villages across Allerdale.

Cumbria County Council is preparing to consult on the plans, which aim to improve road safety.

Among the plans are proposals to extend the 30mph restrictions in Blencogo, Brigham and Seaton to take them beyond new building developments.

At Blindcrake, Dean and Mawbray, the council wants to replace the existing national speed limit with 30mph restrictions.

At Broughton Moor, Flimby Brow, Lowmoor Road in Wigton and Thursby (West), the council want to put 40mph restrictions in place of the existing national speed limit.

Meanwhile, the council wants to remove 30mph limits at Newton Arlosh, Oulton and Curthwaite Road in Thursby, replacing them with the national speed limit.

And in Waverbridge, the council wants to increase an existing 30mph limit to 40mph.

A four-week public consultation on the plans will be launched on Monday, when full details of the proposals will be available at www.cumbria.gov.uk

Drop-in events will be held at Wigton Methodist Church on November 8, Cockermouth Town Hall on November 12 and Maryport Library on November 13, all 3pm to 6.30pm.

Councillor Keith Little, cabinet member for highways, said: "Road safety is one of the top priorities for the county council and I am pleased that we are holding a consultation to understand the views of local people. Reviewing speed limits and analysing traffic data is an important aspect of the work of our highways teams, and the ultimate goal is to enhance road safety and reduce accidents on our roads.

"I’d urge everyone to go along to one of the meetings, or to respond online, so that we have as much information as possible when making final decisions on proposals to change speed limits."
