Cumbria police have issued advice to businesses after a series of fuel thefts in Allerdale.

Thieves struck at West Coast Commercials at Risehow Industrial Estate, Flimby, between 6pm on Wednesday, Feburary 14 and 4.30am on Thursday, February 15 and stole diesel from the tanks of a number HGVS. Some had their fuel lines cut.

On the same night about 300 litres of fuel was stolen from an artic tipper at a Thomas Armstrong yard in Silloth.

The incidents followed another theft of fuel which happened at Pittwood Road, Lillyhall, overnight on February 4 to February 5.

Insp Rachel Gale, of Cumbria police, said: "Thieves stealing fuel is a concerning offence-type, particularly in rural communities.

"Fuel can be stolen from vehicles and storage tanks via siphoning equipment or the cutting of fuel lines.

"We take these types of offences seriously and investigate any such reports."

She advised businesses to take steps to reduce the chance of being targeted.

They include keeping vehicles in secure areas and parking them in well-lit places.

Using CCTV and alarms can also deter criminals, she added.
