Which member of another political party have you admired or do you admire now? Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Prime Minister of Denmark.

What is your biggest personal regret in life? I don’t believe in looking backwards. Everything that happens to us makes us into the person we are.

Which luxury would you take to your desert island? Twentyman’s ice cream!

What was your first ever full-time job? Working in a bookshop.

How much do you drink in a week? Do you smoke? I enjoy an occasional glass of red wine. I don’t smoke.

What is your favourite book? I studied English literature and I read all the time. One of my all-time favourites is The Road To Wigan Pier by George Orwell.

What’s your favourite band/composer/piece of music? Led Zeppelin and early Black Sabbath/Pergolisi/Stabat Mater.

What's your favourite TV show? Game Of Thrones – I’m an addict.

Should Jeremy Clarkson have been sacked from Top Gear? Yes. He was already on a final warning and was violent and abusive to a work colleague, which is totally unacceptable, however famous you are.

What do you like most about West Cumbria and why? The people. West Cumbrians are friendly, hard-working and resilient; the way they worked together after the floods in 2009 was an inspiration to the whole country.

Why should we choose you as our MP? I believe passionately in social justice and would be an advocate for our communities, fighting against inequalities to give everyone the chance to live in a safe, healthy, decent environment.

My vision for our constituency is to create secure, well-paid jobs and real career choices for our children; high-quality health care and education and improved transport links; an end to deprivation and poor housing; and a vibrant countryside for the people who live and work here and a warm welcome for our visitors.
