A group of children created a woodland stage to host a Shakespearean performance.

The year five youngsters from Fairfield Primary School staged A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Setmurthy woods for 100 friends and family on Wednesday evening.

Forty-six youngsters took part in the school’s first open-air production.

Teacher Erin Strickland, who organised it with teacher Emily Clarke, said: “It was wonderful.

“The children excelled themselves and put on a splendid show, helped by the beautiful evening weather.

“Everyone stayed for hot chocolate and coffee from the camp fire afterwards.

“We have had wonderful support from all the parents, including requests for another open air show.”

The academy has been running Forest Schools in the wood for a few years. Children learn a range of outdoor skills.

“It’s the first time we have tried anything like this and feel it is a wonderful way of incorporating outdoor learning into our English curriculum,” said Mrs Strickland.

“The children have really enjoyed doing the play.

“They worked on their own costumes and made decorations for the trees.”
