Marathon man Gary McKee will receive the freedom of Copeland at a ceremony later today.

The Cleator Moor runner, who completed 100 marathons in 100 days earlier this year, will be handed the council's highest accolade at Cleator Moor Bowls and Sports Centre this afternoon.

Councillors decided to honour Gary in recognition of his remarkable fundraising efforts for Macmillan Cancer Support.

His marathon feat saw him raise over £100,000 and, through a range of challenges, he has now raised more than £300,000 for the cancer charity.

"To receive the freedom of the borough is quite humbling, to know that people think of you in that way," said Gary. "I just see it is a bit of running, raising the money is the achievement.

"It's nice to be recognised. At the end of the day, the winners are the charities. It raises their profile if they have somebody doing something for them."
