Motorists are set to endure more delays on their commutes as roadworks on a major route in and out of Carlisle have been extended.

Engineers from Northern Gas Networks (NGN) have been carrying out repairs to pipes on the A595 at Cardewlees following a leak last week.

A 100m stretch of the road is blocked off for the works and two-way traffic lights are in operation.

The works have been causing huge tailbacks near the filling station, especially at rush hour. It has led to many drivers taking alternative routes through Dalston and Great Orton.

Initially the works were due to end two days ago but now NGN has extended the works. A spokesman said that while on the site they’d taken the opportunity to upgrade a section of the gas pipes.

Matty McBride, business operations leader at NGN, said: “Our engineers responded to a smell of gas on the A595, in Cardewlees, Carlisle, in the early hours of August 3.

“They investigated the situation and carried out repairs to the gas main. Engineers are now working to replace the affected section of pipe to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area.

“The gas supply to properties in the area is unaffected and we are aiming to complete the work by Thursday.”
