A rowdy tourist was handed a suspended jail term for causing almost £3,000 damage to a Lake District hotel room.

James Dalby's bad behaviour occurred during a stay at Lakeside House in Keswick on the night of November 11.

Dalby, 27, was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court after admitting a charge of damaging property.

Prosecutor Beccy McGregor said other guests alerted the manager after hearing a "disturbance" from a room occupied by Dalby and his partner.

"Residents also reported to her that there was a duvet covered in blood in the landing," said Ms McGregor.

The manager heard a male voice talking "loudly and aggressively". Finding the door unlocked she went in.

"There was blood all over the room; a lamp had been smashed," said Ms McGregor. "Police were called and described the damage as a bomb site."

A woman in the room was seen to have a facial injury. Dalby was asked about the injury and what had been going on. He said he had been trying to find a way of getting her to hospital.

He confirmed he and his partner had a "good relationship", and that there hadn't been an argument.

Robert Wyn Jones, defending, said: "Mr Dalby has asked me to tell the court he sincerely regrets his actions. He is very embarrassed."

Judge Peter Davies suspended a two-month jail term for two years. Dalby, of Ingleby Barwick, Stockton-on-Tees, must also pay £2,859 for the damage caused.

Judge Davies told the self-employed joiner: "It may be thought 'well, I have only committed criminal damage'.

"But it is a small business. It is a difficult time. It is Keswick, not long after the floods, trying to resurrect the tourist trade.

"It was noisy. It was unpleasant. It needed police to intervene."
