A west Cumbrian man previously convicted and jailed for possessing a Samurai sword in public and harassment is back behind bars - after flouting a court order and punching his former partner.

Barry Simm, 39, was supposed to stay away from Moss Bay Road in Workington under the terms of a restraining order that was imposed by Carlisle Crown Court in September last year.

But after being released from custody, on July 15, he went to Moss Bay Road, and effectively forced his way into a property there.

The court heard how he smashed a glass door panel worth £150 in the process. Inside the property was his former partner Kimberley Bennewith.

An argument ensued, and he punched her four times.

As he imposed a nine month jail sentence on Simm, of Cross Street, Whitehaven, Judge Peter Davies told him: "You should not have been there."

As a result of what he had done, the defendant was himself assaulted.

"That is what you get in these sort of circumstances," continued the judge. "The important thing is that you were on licence and you were in breach of a restraining order; and you assaulted somebody."

The defendant had earlier admitted common assault, breaching the restraining order, and causing criminal damage to the door.

Having heard that the defendant now planned to return to his native Toxteth in Liverpool, the judge added: "Go back to Toxteth, Mr Simm."
