A village school has come up with a great way to raise funds and celebrate their surroundings.

Pupils at Lorton School are appealing to famous Cumbrians and celebrity lovers of the Lakes to draw or write something which reflects their feelings for the area.

They will then display everything at Wordsworth House, in Cockermouth, before auctioning it for school funds.

Friends of Lorton School (FOLS) have written to lots of people about their Drawn to The Lakes project and appealed to others on Facebook and Twitter.

"We are a small rural school in the North West Lakes that specialises in happiness. We love where we learn; our playground looking up to the fells of Lorton Vale. We like to spend as much time as possible outdoors and are raising money for some outdoor learning equipment," wrote FOLS.

"We have heard that you love the Lakes as much as we do and would like you to help celebrate our landscape and people by drawing or writing (maybe even a short poem) something that reflects your love of the lake District."

The school is wanting to buy some musical instruments which they can use outside and needs to raise about £2,000.

Chairman of FOLS Jill Harvey said: "We've had a few responses so far, which is great. A woman who was at Lorton School 70 years ago and is now a creative writer and poet has contacted us.

"And we were delighted to hear from Terry Abraham, the film maker. He saw our appeal on Facebook and got in touch to say he would give us a digital painting he did of Blencathra. It looks brilliant.

"There must be lots more famous Cumbrians or well known people who love the Lakes so we are hoping people will spread the word and they will get in touch."

Contributions must be submitted by Friday, October 12.
