SELLAFIELD workers will be getting on their bikes to help raise cash for a new adventure playground.

Gary Smith, of Whitehaven, and his colleagues from Kaefer C&D, based at the site, are riding the C2C on May 4 and 5.

They are raising money to replace old equipment at All Saints Primary School, Cockermouth, which Gary's five-year-old twins attend.

He said: "The school houses a specialist facility for children who are diagnosed on the autism spectrum. This is one of the few specialist units in the north-west and these units are greatly over subscribed.

"Autism and the spectrum is a disability close to my family with my son, Neeson, attending the facility, and daughter, Neve, also attending the school.

"The adventure playground will allow all of the pupils a safe, secure enjoyable outside play area and which is proven to greatly assist autistic children in the learning environment."

Gary, who cycles regularly to work, also thanked Unite union, Kells Rugby League Club, Porsche Kendal, Kaefer C&D, Zigzag Hairdressers, for their sponsorship and individuals who have already donated to the ride's Just Giving page.

Nicola Smallwood, headteacher at All Saints CE Primary School, said the playground was aiming to be built by Easter and would include tyre swings, monkey bars and a climbing frame.

She said: "We are very grateful to Gary, and all those who have contributed, to the playground. The children are excited to use it in the summer term."
