Talented youngsters in the Cockermouth area have been rewarded by the town's Rotary club.

More than 140 primary school children took part in the annual writing and painting competitions. Year Six pupils were asked to write a story, children in Years One and Two could paint a picture.

Mike Rooney, chair of the Rotary's youth services, said: "There were about 140 entries from seven primary schools. This year's theme was a different perspective.

"The overall standard was high,with some exceptional and imaginative entries."

Zach Graves, of Broughton Primary School, was the overall winner of the writing competition. He was presented with a certificate and £20 token from The New Book Shop by Rotary president Brian Mitchelhill. Runner-up Ava Davidson, of Fairfield School, also received a gift token.

The painting competition was won by Lily Clifford, of Fairfield School. Runner up was Peyton Millican, of St Joseph's School. They each received an art set.
