A pupil at a Workington school raised more than £1,000 by chopping 11 inches of her hair off for charity.

Bethany Langley, 15, who is a pupil at St Joseph's school, managed to raise £1,210 last week.

She will be donating her hair to The Little Princess Trust and also giving them a £545 donation.

The remaining £665 will be going to the Henderson Suite at West Cumberland Hospital, which is the school's Year 11 chosen charity.

Bethany said: "I really wanted to do this so that I could help children who suffer with cancer, I have a little cousin who is only six years old, she was diagnosed with tumours a couple of months ago and is now battling the disease."

Miss Helen Kinrade, head of year 11, said “We wanted to make an event of this for Bethany. We asked the hairdressers over the road from school Saint to come and cut Bethany’s hair and we had donations on the door to watch the cut which took place in our school hall.

"Over £100 was raised from the spectators alone. We as a school are very proud of Bethany and I am especially proud to be her head of year. We have lots of other charitable events organised in the school across all year groups. Our children love to organise and raise money for those who have been affected close to them."

Bethany said she was grateful to the school as well as TSP Engineering, Sealy UK, Thomas Graham and her family and friends for their donations.
