Cockermouth town councillors have agreed to pay for national newspapers to be kept in the library - after the county council said they were to be axed as part of a major cost-cutting exercise.
The county council has decided to scrap the national newspapers in its libraries, as from April 1.
The town council took over the Main Street library last year. Councillors discussed the changes at a meeting and decided it was important that newspapers were still available. They agreed to pay for them.
Councillor Isobel Burns said: "If people are going into the library to read them then we should keep them there, it's the least we can do.
Councillor Rebecca Hanson said: "A lot of people like going in, it's important for them. This is a really worthwhile thing to keep."
