Conservative Trudy Harrison has been re-elected as Copeland MP, four months after her first historic victory.

Mrs Harrison won the Copeland seat with 21,062 votes, ahead of Labour's Gillian Troughton by 1,695 votes.

She said: "To win two elections so close together is remarkable.

"This is a victory for the party that is on the side of ordinary working people which will respect the way we voted in the referendum and those negotiations which will commence in just 10 days.

"I will work hard for each and every one of my constituents on the key issues that really matter – nuclear, industry, jobs, health, education, technical skills, roads, rail and digital connectivity, flood resilience and making sure we get the best deal for Brexit in Copeland."

Mrs Troughton won 19,367 votes, Liberal Democrat Rebecca Hanson won 1,404 votes and Ukip's Herbie Crossman got 1,094 votes.

Turnout was 70.2 per cent. In the 2015 General election, turnout was 63.8 per cent.

Mrs Harrison added: "I'm so fired up. The announcement on April 18 was so frustrating for me because I had just recruited my team chosen for their experience, knowledge of the area an determination to get on with the job.

"We have got both offices set up – here and Westminster.

"My maiden speech has been delivered and I'm firing on all cylinders, raring to go."

After the results were declared, Mrs Troughton said: "I'm obviously really disappointed.

"We had a message of hope. I will continue to fight for our health services."

Mrs Hanson said: "I would like to congratulate the winner. It was a hard-fought fight. It was good to see such a high turnout."

She said she was disappointed but thanked everyone for their positive feedback.

"We are here to stay and I'm really looking forward to getting into my role as county councillor and serving the people of West Cumbria."

Mr Crossman said: "Considering this is my first time up here I'm really pleased with the results. I've enjoyed it and had some fun."
