UP to 1,000 properties and two schools in Cockermouth were left without water after a town mains pipe was damaged by a third party.
All Saints' Primary School and Cockermouth School were both forced to close today.
Between 500 and 1,000 homes were affected, said a United Utilities spokesman.
"The water network is now back to normal and we are doing repairs," he said.
"A third party has damaged the water mains. An inspector is finding out what has been done and by who," he said.
Both schools will keep parents and pupils updated on their websites.
Bridekirk Dovenby School was also closed due to there being no water.
