Illegal immigrants were found to be working at a nail salon and a takeaway in West Cumbria.

Immigration enforcement officers visited Hollywood Nails, on Pow Street, Workington and New Hong Kong Chinese takeaway, on Market Place, Whitehaven, on Thursday.

The nail salon was temporarily closed after officers found two Vietnamese men, aged 17 and 20, who had entered the UK illegally. The 20-year-old was detained pending removal from the country and the teenager was referred to social services.

Owners of Hollywood Nails had already been found to be employing illegal workers at two of their other businesses.

An application for an Illegal Working Compliance Order for the salon was granted by Tameside Magistrates' Court.

This will run until August 2018 and includes requirements that the business owner must check that their employees have the right to work, must permit entry by immigration officers to the premises to inspect for compliance and must inform immigration enforcement in writing before opening any other business.

Owners at New Hong Kong Chinese takeaway were told they could be fined up to £40,000 after immigration enforcement officers found the takeaway had employed a 46-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man, both Chinese nationals, who had entered the UK illegally.

They were arrested and detained pending removal from the UK.

The takeaway owners now need to prove the appropriate right-to- work document checks were carried out, such as seeing a passport or Home Office document, to avoid the fine.

Paul Airlie, assistant director of Greater Manchester Immigration Enforcement, said: "Those who use and exploit illegal workers face severe penalties.

"We are happy to work with businesses to ensure the right pre-employment checks are carried out, but those intent on operating outside the law will be found and will be punished. Businesses which persistently abuse immigration laws by hiring individuals with no right to work in the UK can face closure.

"Using illegal labour is not victimless. It cheats the taxpayer, undercuts honest businesses and cheats legitimate job seekers of employment opportunities."
