Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team was called out to Buttermere to help a walker.
The man was walking down from the Ling Comb area as part of a group around 2.45pm on Monday when he became unsteady on his legs and was unable to continue walking.
Rescuers had trouble finding the casualty among the rough steep ground.
Having tracked him down, the team assessed him and he was stretchered by the team to be winched to safety by a Coastguard rescue helicopter.
He was flown to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle for treatment.
The rescue took around 4 hours and involved 14 team members.
