Young winners of Seaton's sunflower competition have been revealed.

Seaton Parish Council gave each Seaton school child a giant sunflower seed, pots and compost to grow the tallest flower.

Byron Peak, four, who attends Seaton Academy, was overall winner at the school with a 2.49-metre sunflower.

Runner-up was Jake Gregory with a flower measuring 2.25 metres and third was Daniel Graham, with a height of 2.16 metres.

At Seaton Junior School, winner was Sarah Davies, nine, with a sunflower measuring 2.35 metres.

In second position was Olivia Moffat, with a 2.22-metre tall flower and third was Lucas Roper, with a height of 2.12 metres.

Lily Harwood, parish council chairman, visited both schools last week to present the children with a prize and a framed picture of themselves with their sunflowers.

Coun Harwood said: "The children were absolutely thrilled, it was nice to see them so excited."

Paul Bramley, parish council clerk, said: "The council was pleased to find more children entering their flowers this year, some of whose grandparents kindly volunteered garden space.

"Although there were some big plants this year, as well as some huge plate sized flowers, the holders of the record for the tallest sunflowers remain last year's winners Cassi and Maddi Hunter, at 2.79 metres."
