Health is top of the agenda for Workington's re-instated MP.

Sue Hayman has pledged to carry on the fight for health services in west Cumbria, something she had campaigned on during her previous term.

The Labour MP was re-elected with 21,317 votes against Conservative Clark Vasey, with 17,392 votes, Ukip's George Kemp, with 1,556 votes, Lib Dem Phill Roberts, with 1,113 votes and Independent Roy Ivinson, with 278 votes.

Mrs Hayman, who was elected for the first time in 2015, received 5,035 more votes than the previous election, but her majority decreased from 4,686 to 3,925.

She said: "I want to continue with what I've been doing; there's a lot of things I have started, such as fighting for health services.

"I want to continue fighting with the Save Our Beds and Save West Cumberland Hospital campaigns."

Mrs Hayman added her priorities included mental health services.

She said: "Something I think is really important is to have proper social care and mental health services.

"If we did do well, a Labour government would bring physical and mental health together. That is something I'll be arguing for, regardless of the national result."

Mrs Hayman said when the election was called she had started meeting with headteachers to discuss how she could support schools and get proper funding for them.

She added an important issue she will be fighting for is getting better resilience measures for flooding.

"That for me personally is going to be very important, to get better resilience measures and better insurance for people," she continued.

"It's also important we get a good Brexit deal for our farming community and that we push to go ahead with the new nuclear build at Moorside."
