A new shop has opened in Great Broughton.

Broughton Bakehouse has opened in Main Street in a building which housed a butcher's shop 15 years ago.

It is being run by Karen Hughes, who lives next door, helped by her father-in-law Billy Graham, who lives across the road.

The bakehouse is selling the much loved and missed teacakes which used to be made by former village baker, the late Peter Byron.

Karen said: "His partner, Karen Tunstall, who used to run the bakery with him, is making Peter's teacakes for us, as well as cakes and pies. His teacakes are unbelievable, everyone is glad to have them back."

The shop has a range of groceries, including sandwiches, cakes and home-cooked meats.

It also sell pies, bacon and sausages from Lindsay's Butchers in Cockermouth and local free range eggs.

Karen was in the beauty industry for 20 years. She then went to work for Clarke's, the Great Broughton village shop which was opened last summer by Cathy Clarke.

"I enjoyed it so much over there that when Cathy closed the shop to concentrate her business in Maryport, I decided to open this one since we had the building," said Karen.

"Villagers have been so supportive, it's absolutely brilliant."

Karen is married to Andrew, a joiner, who renovated the property with his father, and has two children, Jade, 15, and Brad, 21.
