A bike shop that has been in Workington town centre for over 20 years is to close next month.

The Bike Bank, on Market Place, will close on July 14 and owners Ann and Ian Cale plan to travel the world.

The couple, of Stainburn, have been married for 16 years and plan to visit the Scottish Highlands, before heading to the Arctic Circle, Europe and Africa in their campervan.

Ian, 55, said: “I’m looking forward to having more time, although we’ll have to work part of the year to fund the travelling.”

They will be travelling with their two dogs, Trixie and Tilly.

Ann, 60, said: “It’s exciting to think about the next stage of our lives, although it will take a while to get used to the change.”

Ian was a taxi driver in Keswick when he saw the advert for a shop in Workington and decided to buy it in 1994.

His first shop was called the New Bike Shop and was across the street from The Bike Bank, which opened three years later.

Ian said: “My best memories will be of the good customers we’ve had over the years..”

Paul Fagan, 44, has been a workshop manager at The Bike Bank for six years. He is planning on setting up his own service business in Workington or Whitehaven.

He said: “This is the best job I’ve had. I’ve always wanted to be in the cycling trade but I never had a chance until Ian took me on.”
