Birds of prey are being used to combat the problem of seagulls attacking people in West Cumbria.

In Maryport, a postman was prevented from delivering mail because of the attacking birds and customers emerging from a bakery on Murray Road in Workington were being divebombed as the seagulls tried to snatch their purchases.

Mike Morrison who lives in Maryport and has two barn owls, an eagle owl, a red-tailed hawk and two Harris hawks has set up his own business – Spirit Falconry and Pest Control.

A medical centre in Whitehaven recently called on his services to stop scaring off their patients.

Londoner Mike, 42, has owned birds of prey for 13 years.

He said: “I have always loved them. I used to look after some on a voluntary basis on a farm near where I lived in Kent and then got my own bird.”

He also shows his birds as a popular attraction at local events.

He said his birds of prey were effective at scaring off seagulls and could be used in the control of many other pests.

Mike, who has been in Maryport for just over a year, added: “I love it here. I am glad I moved.”
