A Workington pub has reopened its doors after being given a new lease of life.

The Royal Oak, on Pow Street, has been taken over by Katie's Kitchen.

Previously on Jane Street, the business has moved to the pub premises.

The family business will trade as Katie's Kitchen during the day and is planning to become the Royal Oak in the evenings.

Julie Collister, assistant manager, said the move will allow the business to grow.

She said: "We have been looking for a bigger premises for a while and in our old place we had just six tables downstairs and a lot of people could not manage the stairs.

"But we now have something all on one level. We are able to serve more people and we have got 20 tables when we had 14 before.

Now we can be wheelchair friendly and pushchair friendly too."

Katie's Kitchen closed two weeks ago so staff could move into the Royal Oak and began serving customers on Pow Street last weekend.

The business has applied for an alcohol licence and is due to hear next week if it is successful, meaning it will also be able to trade as a pub.

Once they can start serving alcohol, the management hope to add pub meals to their menu and bring in entertainment at weekends.

Julie added: "Our first weekend was hectic with it being a new place, but it was brilliant. I can't wait for the future as it looks good.

"We hope all our previous customers follow us and we look forward to welcoming new customers.

"I enjoy the bar side as it's something different. It'll be a cafe in the day and a bar at night and we want to do steak nights and curry nights."
