A landscaper hopes he has achieved a hole in one by reopening Distington Golf Course.

Chris Wills, 31, has reopened the course following a short closure after the retirement of previous owner Keith Waring.

Chris, of Hayton, near Aspatria, said: "I got a phone call saying it was available and would I be interested in having a go at turning it around.

"I went up to look around the place and really the views are pretty spectacular.

"I've got it up and running now but I'll put a lot of effort into improvements over the year.

"A lot of local people just drive past it but I want it to be the first place people think of."

Chris, who describes himself as a keen golfer but not a very good one, started his own landscaping business Greenscape four years ago.

With his knowledge and the help of Keith, who designed and built the course and owned it for 25 years, he has restored it.

He added: "It looked like a builders' yard when we came up and now it looks like a tidy builders' yard because we're still working on it all the time.

"We've just given it a lick of paint to start with but the plan is to keep improving.

"What we really want is feedback and people to be critical so we can focus on what they actually want because that's how it'll be successful.

"It's a massive opportunity to put something back into the area."

The course's driving range has been cleaned up and Chris plans to expand the golf footee section of the course, which combines golf and football.
