Cockermouth's biggest employer is set to leave town.

James Walker and Co has revealed it plans to relocate its flood-hit factory to Lillyhall, Workington.

The firm, which employs 471 people, is in talks with Allerdale council about moving to a new development.

The news comes a week after the Government announced £5 million funding to help turn Lillyhall into West Cumbria’s top business park.

A James Walker spokesman said: “Following floods in 2009 and again in 2015, James Walker and Co has been considering options to mitigate future risk to the business.

“We can confirm we are in discussions with Allerdale Council and other agencies about becoming an anchor tenant at the proposed Lillyhall North development, alongside other local businesses.”

The company, which makes seals and gaskets, has been based in Cockermouth for nearly 60 years.

Mark Brook, supply chain director, said: “We need to eliminate the risk of flooding and have business continuity for our customers and security for our employees.”

The company announced its plan to employees this week.

Mr Brook said: “They were positive, it shows our commitment to the business and business in West Cumbria.

"It’s a great opportunity if we can make it work. It’s in all our interests.”

The firm is working on a feasibility study with the council and Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership, which secured the funding.

Mr Brook said: “Nothing’s going to happen overnight – there are all sorts of hurdles we have to deal with.”
