A Workington factory which threatened job losses has put a proposal for change to its workforce.

Workers have been balloted following an 11-week consultation period involving union Unite, which has about 200 members at Amcor.

Amcor Flexibles Cumbria announced plans in June to cut 74 jobs – more than a fifth of its 360-strong workforce – at Salterbeck Industrial Estate.

A consultation with staff was then launched after which the current proposal was drawn up. It is not known how many jobs are currently at risk.

The firm believes the proposal will “position the site for success and provide a strong foundation upon which the business can grow”.

Angela Gibbs, plant general manager at Amcor Flexibles Cumbria, said: “The ballot gives the people at the site an opportunity to influence their future and we are confident that the vote will endorse the proposal.”

The company has not given details of the reasons behind its proposals.
