Plans have been submitted to demolish a Workington estate's only pub.

James Hall & Co Ltd, which is a wholesaler and distributor for Spar, wants to knock down The Moorclose pub, on Newlands Lane South.

The pub closed in April after more than 50 years following owner Admiral Taverns' decision to sell the building.

A spokesman for James Hall said work would begin as soon as permission was granted.

They added: "We haven't decided yet what we will be doing on the site.

"We are evaluating our position."

The demolition would be carried out between 8.30am and 6pm on weekdays.

Carol Carter, who lives on the street, said: "Once the demolition work has started, will the whole site be cordoned off, if so where are we to park our cars?

"At present we park on the pub car park and have done for last 15 years."

Workington Town Council had no objections to the plans.

The pub ran pool and darts teams, held functions and was a hub for the community.

Karen Blair, who was landlady at the pub for 22 years, had recently signed a new five-year lease but was then given six months’ notice that the pub would close.

Moorclose town and borough councillor Denis Robertson had wanted to make the pub a community asset.

He and fellow councillor Stephen Stoddart complained that their community was being dismantled and called for a new social club in the area to give people somewhere to go.

In October, a spokesman from Admiral Taverns said: “From time to time we do have to take the decision to sell a property that we do not believe has a long-term future.

“As such, we have agreed to sell the Moorclose Inn pub in Workington.”

People can comment on the plans until July 21.
