Plans to turn a former print works in Keswick into two holiday lets accessible to disabled people have faced opposition from town councillors who feel the site should be used to house local people.

Thomas Quinn, of Sunderland, wants to develop Bakers Yard at 24A St John's Street.

Town councillor Denstone Kemp said: "Until we have got enough housing for local people in this town I don't want to see any holiday lets, second homes or anything else built.

"Then we can look at building things for people to move into or visit the area."

Mr Quinn said there was currently no wheelchair-accessible holiday accommodation in the Keswick area.

Coun David Burn said: "If it's true that there isn't any self-catering accommodation suitable for disabled people in Keswick that's shameful."

But Coun Adam Paxon added: "I think it's shameful that we don't have enough housing for people who grew up in this town.

"That was a printing works for over 100 years. If its use is going to be changed I'd be a bit more supportive of a local need being met than a visitor need."

The town council voted to object to the plans, which will be decided by the Lake District National Park Authority.
