A family-run Dearham company is set to more than double its workforce thanks to £6 million worth of contracts.

Ashcroft Plant Hire employed 70 people two years ago. It now has 125 and is aiming to hire another 25 people over the next 12 months.

The expansion has led the firm to open new offices on the site for the former Evonik Goldschmidt chemical factory at Flimby.

It has retained its Dearham property and also has a demolition and recycling plant on Flimby’s Risehow estate.

Chris Ashcroft, managing director, said the company’s growth had been the result of a buoyant industry and the ability to win major contracts.

Its involvement in the new £19m M-Sport test track at Dovenby for Northern Developments and the £17m Workington Academy for Sir Robert McAlpine are worth around £4.5 million,

The company also won a £1.5 million contract with a new Aldi store in Dumfries.

Mr Ashcroft said: “It’s an exciting time. We have a very strong team culture and it’s great to see it prosper. I’m pleased to welcome our new recruits, all of whom are from the local area.”

Ashcroft Plant Hire began trading in 1994 when Mr Ashcroft bought his first excavator, working out of a small yard at his family’s farm at Dearham.
