One of the largest employers in Cockermouth has recognised the work of its long serving staff.

Managers at James Walker presented 25 and 40-year service awards to employees with a ceremony at the town’s Trout Hotel.

Barbara Kennon, 65, of Broughton, is a logistics administrator and has been working at the firm for 40 years.

She said: “I feel very honoured. It’s just such a friendly place to work, these years have flown.

"There have been many changes in the firm, but they have all been for the better.”

Brian Pattinson, 65, of Brigham, is a senior mould controller and has also been working for James Walker for 40 years.

He said: “I feel really privileged, not many people stay in a job for so long. What I like about the company is that it’s fair.

"The changes from when I’ve started have been massive, we used to travel up and down the factory to talk to one another and now of course we have emails. As long as my health is okay, I’m not planning on retiring, I’d like to carry on working.”

Martin and Christine Laidlow, 47, of Great Broughton,  met through school and went on to work for the firm together. The married couple have received a recognition for their 25 years at James Walker.

Christine said: “Thirteen of my family members work in the company, it’s just brilliant.”

Mark said: “It’s such a friendly place, all our friends work there with us.”

Peter Niedham, company chairman and chief executive, said: “These people are at the heart of our business and this shows our family ethos. I am proud of what we have achieved in our time in Cockermouth.”

Mark Brook, supply chain director, said: “It’s great to see we have families, friends and colleagues receiving these awards.

“It’s part of the realisation that there’s something different in working for James Walker.”
