A Workington engineering firm has been handed a silver award in a national safety scheme.

TSP Engineering, of Derwent Howe, was given a silver prize in this year’s RoSPA Health and Safety Awards 2016.

The awards, now in their 60th year, are run by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.

They were held at the Hilton Glasgow hotel.

Accolades are handed out to businesses and organisations which have shown commitment to accident and ill-health prevention.

Judges consider entrants’ occupational health and safety management systems, along with leadership and workforce involvement.

The award comes at a time where TSP Engineering has also been shortlisted for both the Excellence in Health and Safety and the Inspiring People Award at the BECBC Business Awards.

It has also been shortlisted for a Manufacturing Facility of the Year and Training and Development Award at CN Group’s Business Awards.

John Coughlan, director of operations at the firm, said: “We are very proud to receive this prestigious award which recognises the efforts taken within our business by all employed to keep and contribute to the maintenance of a safe, clean, healthy and secure work environment.

“We all recognise our responsibility to contribute to the protection of each other right down to promoting a healthy lifestyle.”

Julia Small, RoSPA’s head of awards and events, added: “To win an award at such a highly-regarded event is a great achievement for our winners.

“It recognises their commitment to maintaining an excellent health and safety record and raises the bar for other organisations to aspire to.

“This year was doubly special for our winners as their achievements were recognised as the RoSPA Awards celebrated its diamond anniversary, which is a ringing endorsement of the thousands of businesses and organisations that have committed to continuous improvement in accident and ill-health prevention.”
