A Workington residential home has been rated “good” in its first inspection since opening.

The Fairways, in Branthwaite Road, was given the rating by the Care Quality Commission following an inspection in May.

Two adult social care inspectors met residents, visitors and staff as well as reviewing care and staff files.

Paula Carruthers, who co-owns the home with her sister-in-law, Cathy Keogh, said she was pleased with comments in the report from residents and their families.

She said: “We took over the home after it had closed down so we basically had to start from scratch. The staff are delighted because they’ve all worked really hard over the last two years and this is recognition that they’re doing a good job.

“We now want to maintain and improve this standard, hit the outstanding rating in the next inspection and develop the site up to 53 beds from 26.

“It’s the residents’ home so as long as they’re happy and safe, that’s the main thing.”

Inspectors said the home, which opened in 2014, was safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

They highlighted good arrangements to protect people from harm and abuse and said catering was of a very high standard.

Staff were described as caring, conscientious and respectful and the management team were said to keep extremely high standards.

People were said to be treated with dignity and their privacy was maintained at all times.

Inspectors observed that disabilities or impairments were not seen as a barrier and said the service provided seemed “truly person-centred”.
