Entertainment chain HMV wants to return to Workington, two years after leaving the town.

The popular store is just a step away from moving back into its old premises in Washington Square and town centre manager Dave Fletcher said he was positive that the deal would be sealed soon.

Mr Fletcher said: “Deals haven’t yet been finalised but we are working well and hoping to have good news in the next couple of weeks.

“It’s just a matter of signing on the dots and then they’ll be in by September.”

He said he was in talks with a second retailer for the town, but could not reveal which chain he was dealing with.

A third empty unit, the former Phones 4U shop in the middle of Washington Square, has been taken over by cafe bakery chain Muffin Break.

It is currently refitting the shop.

And toy shop The Entertainer revealed its plans to open a branch in the town, in the unit opposite Laura Ashley, earlier this month.

If HMV and the unidentified retailer move in, then there will be just two empty units in the centre.

Mr Fletcher said: “It will be the best it’s ever been. I’m sure once the new businesses open that others will follow."
