A new cafe that will focus on healthy food planned in Workington in August.

The Hungry Caterpillar would take over the former Craig Travel premises on Finkle Street.

It will be run by Ashleigh Ridings, 26, of Station Road, Workington, who has applied to Allerdale council for a change of use on the building.

Ashleigh runs Henry's Bar and Grill on Bridge Street with her partner Paul McGee and has helped to run family-owned cafes and pubs.

If it gets the go ahead, the cafe will offer a range of items including salads, wraps, bagels, protein shakes and salads.

Ashleigh said: "I've wanted to do it since I was young. I used to do drama and dance and I've been into healthy food since I was 16.

"It would be amazing working for myself. That has been a main goal.

"I do make-up for people and I like the flexibility and making people feel good about themselves."

Ashleigh wants to use the cafe to help educate customers about what food they are eating.

The business would employ five members of staff and an NVQ student with an interest in nutrition would also be offered the chance to help out.

Ashleigh plans to leave her job as an employment advisor to run the cafe full-time.

She added: "There are a lot of areas in Workington that are not in use.

"We've got a lot of places doing pub food, but this will give people a bit of variety. Once you find something that you're passionate about it comes naturally."

A decision about the change of use application is due in about six to eight weeks.
