A Cockermouth restaurant devastated during Storm Desmond is ready to reopen its doors to customers.

The Honest Lawyer is due to reopen on April 26 after undergoing an extensive renovation following the floods.

Owner and head chef George Cherian, had taken charge of the establishment a little under 18 months prior to the storm and has led the restaurant's bid to reopen.

The popular eatery, which originally served as the town’s courthouse, sits next to the River Cocker and was completely destroyed during the deluge taking in more than five foot of flood water.

Following a challenging five months the restaurant now had a new interior, furniture and equipment.

The menu, previously focusing on a French and British style of cooking, will now offer more Italian themed fare and will also open for lunch.

He said: "It's been a difficult time but at last, we are ready to open and having made some changes to our menu and styling, we’re feeling very positive about the future.

“We've pared back the menu and are presenting a more relaxed and informal dining experience, perfect for couples, families and those seeking good quality food at a reasonable price.

"Moreover, we’re looking forward to welcoming back new and familiar faces having been closed for so long.

"We have received a great deal of support and encouragement throughout this ordeal.

"Members of the community helped us clear away the deluge in the days immediately following the flood and we would like to say a very big ‘thank you’ to everybody who has helped us get to this point."
