Plans for a multi-level car park and roof garden at the back of Workington's Washington Central Hotel have been halted.

Dobies Cumbria Group obtained planning permission for the development in May 2011.

Initial work began to change fire escapes within the existing hotel and talks began with the management company responsible for the Washington Square development.

The car park would have been attached to the upper stories of the hotel, above one of the development's service yards.

Following a change in the Washington Square's ownership, new management company Scoop has refused permission for the extension to overhang its site.

Mr Dobie said he hoped he might be able to resurrect the development if there was a future change in management company but for now the work had been put on hold.

He added: "It would have had no detrimental effect on the service yard. It would be a great asset.

"Due to the time and effort and many tens of thousands of pounds spent on fees, we feel the current leaseholder hasn't dealt with it as he ought for the benefit of West Cumbria."

The car park would have had 33 spaces and been spread over five levels, with access to the hotel from each level.

The roof garden would have been built on top of it and Mr Dobie had expected it to become a popular venue for wedding receptions and photos.
