Winder Hall at Low Lorton, near Cockermouth, is still on the market around six months after it was first put up for sale.

The former hotel closed in December.

It remains on the market for £700,000 with PFK estate agents.

Owner Nick Lawler, of Lorton, opened what he described as an “upmarket bed and breakfast” with his wife Ann in 2002.

But economic pressure had forced him to make the decision to close.

The seven-bedroom building is described by the agents as one of Lakeland’s most interesting and ancient properties.

Malcolm III of Scotland is recorded as staying there in the 11th century and poet William Wordsworth was also a regular visitor.

The house includes Tudor fireplaces, a Jacobean dining hall, priest holes and 19th century oak panelling.

There is also an enclosed Jacobean knot garden and the front garden includes a steam room and hot tub.

The original builders of the house were the Winders, the lords of the manor, who lived in the hall for around 300 years.

The four-bedroom Stables Cottage, which shares Winder Hall land, is for sale separately for £465,000.
